Woohoo In The Stars (Christina Aguilera vs Tinie Tempah)

Woohoo In The Stars (Christina Aguilera vs Tinie Tempah) by TheMixdown

I've wanted to do a mashup of "Woohoo" for a while. Christina has such a raw, feral energy to her vocals that she can make virtually anything she sings over shine. But I actually liked the scoring from the original version of "Woohoo" so I've been patient with selecting a really dynamic floorfiller to play background to this mash because I wanted it to trump the original. Thankfully, 2010 was the year of Tinie Tempah and with his amazingly talented production team he put out one of the best, if not THE BEST, grime album of the year. His third single "Written In The Stars" featuring the awesome Eric Turner topped the UK dance charts for obvious reasons.

Together, Christina and Tinie make a deadly team. I think people who liked 2012 Can't Handle Me will love this mashup as well.

Mixed In Key 2010
2010-11-25
Nu Disco-Indie Dance
14:07

My entry for the 2010 Mixed In Key Competition. Rules were to mix something 10-15 minutes and stay within one genre. You can imagine how HARD that last part was for me...thus I chose my favorite style: Nu Disco/Indie Dance. The track listing is pretty much all my heroes. I mixed this live without any sequenced edits, which might be stupid in hindsight cause I was going mad switching between 4 decks on only 2 sets of EQs & faders. Anyway, hope it gets you dancing!

Russ Chimes - Midnight Club (Intro)
Freshlovers - Beverly Hills Chase (Digikid84 Remix)
Classixx ft Jeppe - I'll Get You

Imaginated

Imaginated: When something imagined becomes reality.

A mix for the road warrior and party-goer! Its got some of my favorite new/older tracks done up in true Mixdown-mashup style. Aside from Douster's Disney-themed intro, this mix has a heavy-handed nu 80s vibe, courtesy of inspiration ala Russ Chimes. I bought his new single "Targa" a couple nights ago and began planning this mix around it. The middle gets kind of clubbish, but the end is textbook nu disco.

Douster - King of Africa
Mochi Beats - Call on Hustla
Fear of Tigers vs Far East Movement - What Did I Do? (The Mixdown "G6" Live Edit)
Futurecop! - Starworshipper
iSquare - Hey Sexy Lady
Major Lazer Feat. Vybz Kartel ft. Afrojack - Pon De Floor
Jay Sean vs David Guetta - 2012 Can't Handle Me (The Mixdown "Rekicked" Live Edit)
Skrillex ft. Penny - All I Ask of You
Russ Chimes - Targa
Grum - Heartbeats (The Mixdown "Glamorous" Live Edit)

Full On Bass & Breaks
2010-10-03
Defying Genre
26:28

My philosophy on genre:
I may not like the majority of tracks from a particular genre, but if I can find an artist whose niche in that genre I do like, I'll exploit it in my mixes.

I know there's a risk in mixing the way I do. Since I don't stick to one or two genres in a set I could lose an audience in an instant, by playing from a genre they don't like. But honestly? I mix what I want to hear, and what I want to hear is diverse styles juxtaposed in interesting ways. And if you dig what I do? Thank you! Let's talk geeky music stuff! If you don't? Move on, but thanks for opening your mind enough to give it a try!

On the mix:
"Full On Bass & Breaks" is probably the hardest, filthiest, grimiest clusterfuck you've heard from The Mixdown thus far and here's why - I've laid out the mix like a 7 course meal. You get a taste of everything, go nuts, but leave anticipating your next dinner.

Serendipity in Freeform
2010-08-29
House-Indie-Pop-HipHop-DnB-Funk-Mashup
23:40

This could be considered my most ambitious mix so far. Why?
  1. Crazy/Experimental genre transitions (that actually sound good!!)
  2. Non-contiguous tempo phrasing (BPM PWNED!)
  3. Live mash-ups! (whoop whoop!)
  4. The Mixdown intro soundbyte! (legit-ly amateur, yo)
In essence, this mix is a love-child of my obsession with genre diversity. Not unlike myself, Serendipity in Freeform doesn't quite know where it fits . . . it tries out a bunch of styles: gangsta, UK underground, pop, hipster/indie dance, italo house - only to learn in the end that choosing is the mistake. Closing the door on multiple styles of music suffocates innovation. And isn't innovation what we're all searching for? Why choose when the greater good could come from making them work together? Hence, the win of mashup! Music doesn't always have to make you think, but it should always make you feel.

The Mixdown - Intro
Alice In Videoland - Ladykiller
Drake (ft. Lil Wayne) - Still Fly
B Complex - Beautiful Lies
Ellie Goulding - Under The Sheets
Phoenix - Lisztomania (Classixx Version)
Digikid84 (ft. Blackshere) - Love Spell

Black Box - Ride on Time
The Mixdown - The Rich Freeze Too (T-Pain vs Fear of Tigers)

Libidinous

House-Electro-Handsup
34:36
~128 bpm

This may be my favorite Mixdown so far! Why do I love it? It's just so fucking SEXY! Rooted in that smooth, italo-house style EDX is famous for, it's hard not to imagine a sea of people writhing to the music. There's quite a bit of live mashing going on because for the first time, I used 4 channels for this mix. And I loved it! The dynamic of multiple tracks battling and complimenting each other on the fly, is an aural landmine! But I need to buy a dedicated 4 channel mixer to make this work for real. I'm usually fond of keeping my sets under 30 minutes, but this one winds on and on so effortlessly that you'll start it, get lost, and snap-to 35 minutes later wondering how the time passed...

Way Out West - Surrender (Intro)
Morgan Page - Fight for You
Sound Of Soho ft. Amanda Wilson - Smile
Djs From Mars - Not My Tubular Bells Tonight (Christina Aguilera vs Mike Oldfield)

Rhythm Masters & MYNC Ft. Wynter Gordon - I Feel Love (Avicii's Forgotten Remix)
Stress & Rye Rye - Nananah! (Electrolightz remix)
Young Money - Bedrock (Vindata Dance Remix)
Mark Ronson & The Business Intl - Bang Bang Bang (Russ Chimes Remix)
Alex Tong - Chakalaka Pjanoo (Pryda vs Wippenberg)
Chemical Brothers - Swoon (Boys Noize Summer Mix)

Nightsteps & Storytales

Mashup Madness!
23:38
~128 bpm

So what's the elevator speech for Nightsteps & Storytales? Let's start with this - it's mashup after mashup of cut-up, bastard pop, beauty! I'll drop some names and let your imagination go wild. Lady Gaga, Will.I.Am, T-Pain, Nelly Furtado, Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas, Metallica, Jay-Z, MSRTKRFT, Amanda Blank, Empire of the Sun, Lady Sovereign, plus half a dozen more underground electro gods! Despite some harmonically-challenged transitions I'm not totally smitten with, the overall feel of this mix blends the bootlegging talent of some of my favorite DJ/producers of the moment and that is a goal worth pursuing in my book. You can expect the typical genre clusterfuck of a Mixdown set - house, rock, pop, hip-hop, electro, and a snippet of trance too!

Hey Now - Girl Can Cook (Grafton Primary vs Lifelike)
Cut-Up Boys - Electro Shock 2005/Make A Move On Me (Soulseekerz vs Joey Negro)
The White Panda - Hold On My Momma (Will.I.Am vs The Vanish)
Djs From Mars - Enter Telephone (Lady Gaga vs Metallica)
Three Fingers - Bounce N.A.S.A (MSTRKRFT vs Futurecop!)
Djs From Mars - Empire State of Feeling (Jay-Z vs Black Eyed Peas vs Alicia Keys)
The Hood Internet - Cowgirls In America (T-Pain vs Dom)
Mochi Beats - Walking on Greece (Empire of the Sun vs Amanda Blank vs Three Drives)
Freekstyler - Love Me or Do It (Nelly Furtado vs Lady Sovereign)

Electro-Mashup-Clusterfuck
27:41
~128 bpm

It only took me 2.5 months to put up a new mix . . . but I promise the wait was worth it? Rx Sounds was inspired by this TEDs Talk by Robert Gupta within which he elucidates on why "music is medicine." I thought it was a wonderful theme to bring into one of my mixes, hence the not-so-subtle prescription reference. Like my Last Day of Classes mix, I throw in an original live mash of R&B hero Jason Derulo and rising electro boy ________ . Yes, it's a genre clusterfuck, but it will make you shake yo ass. I'm keeping the playlist a secret to let the mystery add to the magic.
